Philip Lansdale diary, 1864

Diary kept by Philip Lansdale, a surgeon in the U.S. Navy who served aboard the U.S.S. Hartford in 1864. Lansdale lived in Pennsylvania. His diary contains a variety of information, including addresses, recipes, newspaper clippings about the Hartford, and copies of correspondence. One of the copied items was orders, written by Connecticut's Gideon Welles.

A native of Glastonbury, Conn., Gideon Welles began his career as a lawyer but took up journalism as a profession, founding the Hartford Times, which he also edited, in 1826. Active in the Democratic Party in Connecticut, he served in the Connecticut state legislature and in several state offices.
